Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, has issued an ultimatum to all Tesla employees, stating that they must return to the main company offices if they wish to continue working remotely. This directive was communicated through a leaked email, where Musk emphasized that a minimum of 40 hours per week is non-negotiable. He made it clear that any exceptions would be reviewed and approved by him personally.
The leaked email, shared on Twitter by @SamNissim and reported by @WholeMarsBlog, outlined Musk’s expectations. He stated that remote workers must spend a minimum of 40 hours per week in the office, which he described as a stricter requirement than that of factory workers. Musk further specified that the office must be a main Tesla office directly related to the employee’s job duties. For example, an employee responsible for human relations at the Fremont factory cannot have their office located in another state.
Confirmation of Musk’s email came when he responded to a tweet from @WholeMarsBlog, saying, “They should pretend to work somewhere else.” This response solidified that Musk did indeed send the email.
With this stringent approach towards remote work, it raises the question of whether Twitter employees should take notice of Tesla’s stance. Elon Musk’s expectations for his employees may prompt other companies to reevaluate their remote work policies as well.
