According to sources familiar with the matter, Meta Platforms is requesting employees who work in an office to come in three times a week starting in September. This decision aligns with a general trend in the tech industry to reduce remote work.

This move is part of Meta’s broader efforts to increase efficiency, as stated by an anonymous source familiar with the company’s policies. The company recently completed a long process of laying off 10,000 employees, which began in March and negatively impacted productivity.

However, employees who are already working remotely will be allowed to continue working from their current locations, as confirmed by one of the sources. A Meta spokesperson emphasized the company’s commitment to distributed work and stated that they believe employees can make a significant impact whether working from the office or from home. They also mentioned that Meta is continuously improving their model in order to foster collaboration, relationships, and a positive work culture. This change was initially reported by The Information.

The idea of requiring employees to come into the office has been under discussion by Meta’s management for some time. In March, CEO Mark Zuckerberg publicly stated that an internal analysis revealed that early-career engineers perform better, on average, when working in person with their teammates at least three days a week. Zuckerberg encouraged Meta employees to seek out more opportunities to work together in person.
